If you've ever watched a CrossFit competition and wondered what it's actually like to compete, you're not alone. From multiple workouts and heats to teams, judges, and a packed competition floor, a CrossFit competition can look very different from a typical class at your local gym.
But you don't have to be an elite athlete to compete.
CrossFit competitions offer athletes of different experience levels an opportunity to challenge themselves, work toward a goal, and experience the sport from a completely different perspective.
At Build Your Dreams CrossFit in Houston, we're passionate about helping athletes discover what they're capable of—whether that's completing their first pull-up, improving their fitness, or stepping onto the competition floor for the first time.
This week, several BYD athletes are doing exactly that as they compete at the BCS Classic in Bryan, Texas.
So, what exactly is a CrossFit competition, and what should a first-time competitor expect?
What Is a CrossFit Competition?
A CrossFit competition is an event where athletes complete a series of workouts designed to test different areas of fitness.
Unlike a regular CrossFit class, where the goal is primarily personal improvement, competitions introduce an element of performance and scoring. Athletes are ranked based on how they perform in each workout and across the competition.
Workouts can test:
Strength
Endurance
Power
Speed
Gymnastics
Olympic lifting
Conditioning
Mental toughness
You may know some of the movements ahead of time, while other workouts may be revealed shortly before—or even during—the competition.
Do You Have to Be an Elite Athlete to Compete?
No.
This is one of the biggest misconceptions about CrossFit competitions.
Competitions often offer different divisions based on experience, ability, age, or team composition. This gives athletes opportunities to compete against others at a similar level.
For many people, the goal isn't to win.
It might be:
Completing a first competition
Testing your fitness
Working toward a personal goal
Challenging yourself outside your comfort zone
Experiencing the competition environment
Training with a teammate
Representing your gym
Competition can be whatever you want it to be.
What Is a CrossFit Team Competition?
Not every competition is an individual event.
Team competitions allow athletes to work together throughout the weekend. Depending on the event, teams may consist of two, three, four, or more athletes.
Team workouts can require athletes to:
Split repetitions
Alternate movements
Complete synchronized exercises
Divide work strategically
Communicate throughout the workout
Support one another through difficult moments
Team competitions add another layer to CrossFit because success isn't just about your individual performance. You have to work together.
That makes communication and strategy just as important as strength and conditioning.
What Are Heats?
If you've never attended a CrossFit competition, you'll probably hear the word "heat" frequently.
A heat is simply a group of athletes or teams completing the same workout during a scheduled time.
For example, if 20 teams are competing in a division, they may be divided into several heats throughout the day.
Your team will receive a heat number and a scheduled start time. You'll typically have time beforehand to warm up, review the workout, and get ready to compete.
Once your heat begins, it's time to work.
How Are CrossFit Competitions Scored?
Each competition has its own scoring system, but athletes are generally awarded points based on their performance in each workout.
Depending on the workout, you might be scored based on:
Time
Repetitions
Weight
Distance
Calories
Points
Your placement in each workout contributes to your overall competition ranking.
This means you don't necessarily need to win every workout to have a successful competition. Consistency across multiple events can be incredibly important.
How Are Competition Workouts Different From Regular CrossFit Workouts?
Competition workouts often look familiar to experienced CrossFit athletes because they use many of the same movements you'll see in a regular class.
The difference is the environment.
In a competition, you'll have:
Judges watching your movement standards
A clock counting down
Other athletes competing beside you
Spectators cheering
Official scoring
More pressure and excitement
Movements that feel manageable during a normal class can feel very different when you're standing on the competition floor.
That's part of the experience.
How Do You Prepare for Your First CrossFit Competition?
Preparation starts well before competition weekend.
Build a Strong Fitness Foundation
You don't need to be perfect at every movement, but having a solid foundation of strength, conditioning, and movement skills will help you feel more confident.
Practice Competition-Style Workouts
Training occasionally under competition-style conditions can help you become comfortable with working at higher intensity while managing transitions, movement standards, and strategy.
Work on Your Weaknesses
Competition can expose areas of your fitness that need attention.
Use training to improve those weaknesses rather than avoiding them.
Practice With Your Team
For team competitions, communication matters.
Practice how you'll divide work, communicate during workouts, and support one another when things don't go according to plan.
Prioritize Recovery
More training isn't always better.
Sleep, nutrition, hydration, and rest are important parts of preparing for competition.
You want to arrive at competition weekend ready to perform—not exhausted from trying to cram in extra workouts at the last minute.
What Should You Expect on Competition Day?
Competition day can be exciting—and a little overwhelming.
You'll likely spend much of the day moving between:
Warm-up areas
Athlete check-in
Competition floor
Rest areas
Equipment zones
Spectator areas
There may be long periods between workouts, followed by a few intense minutes where you give everything you've got.
One of the most important things you can learn is how to manage the entire day, not just each individual workout.
Eat, hydrate, recover, and stay focused between events.
What About the Nerves?
Feeling nervous before your first competition is completely normal.
In fact, nerves can be part of what makes competing so rewarding.
You may feel nervous walking onto the competition floor. You may question whether you're ready. You may worry about making a mistake.
Then the clock starts.
You do the work.
And when it's over, you'll know you challenged yourself in a way you hadn't before.
That's a win regardless of where you finish on the leaderboard.
You Don't Have to Compete to Benefit From CrossFit
Competition isn't the goal for everyone, and that's completely okay.
CrossFit can help you become stronger, healthier, and more capable without ever stepping onto a competition floor.
For some athletes, competition provides an exciting goal to work toward.
For others, their goals might be completely different.
Maybe you want to:
Get your first pull-up
Improve your health
Lose weight
Build strength
Run a race
Have more energy
Find a supportive community
There is no single definition of success.
BYD at the BCS Classic
This week, Build Your Dreams CrossFit is proud to have athletes competing at the BCS Classic in Bryan, Texas.
For our athletes, this weekend is about more than workouts and scores. It's an opportunity to put months of training to the test, work together as a team, and represent the community they've built at BYD.
We're excited to cheer them on and experience the weekend together as a community.
Whether you're competing on the floor or supporting from the sidelines, events like this are a reminder of what makes CrossFit special: people challenging themselves while encouraging the people around them.
Could Your First CrossFit Competition Be Next?
You don't need to be the strongest person in the gym to compete.
You don't need to know every CrossFit movement.
And you certainly don't need to be an elite athlete.
You simply need a goal, a willingness to work, and a coach and community that can help you prepare.
At Build Your Dreams CrossFit, we believe everyone should have the opportunity to discover what they're capable of—whether your next challenge is your first class or your first competition.
